If you’re dreaming of those curled up, squishy, perfectly sleepy newborn portraits, timing truly makes all the difference.
One of the most common questions we get from new moms is “When is the best age for newborn photos?”

We suggest photographing your baby when he is 5-14 days old for those sleepy newborn portraits and here’s why.
Extra Sleepy
Newborns tend to sleep deeply and for longer stretches during this time. That deep sleep allows us to gently pose them into those cozy, womb like positions without disturbing them.
Naturally Curled
Your baby has spent nine months tucked in tight. During the first 10 days or so, they still naturally curl their legs in and keep their hands close to their face, perfect for those classic sleepy poses parents love.
Less Sensitive to Touch
As babies approach 3–4 weeks, they become more alert and more aware of being moved. Earlier sessions allow for smoother transitions between poses.
Fewer Baby Breakouts
While every baby is different, newborn skin tends to be a little clearer during that first week. Around weeks 3–5, baby acne and colic can start to appear.

What If My Baby Is Older Than 2 Weeks?
Don’t worry! Beautiful portraits are still absolutely possible.
At 3–6 weeks, babies are typically:
- More alert
- Making eye contact
- Stretching out more
- Showing little personality expressions
Instead of focusing on deeply posed images, sessions at this stage often include more wrapped poses and sweet awake portraits. They’re just different and equally meaningful.

When Should You Book Your Sleepy Newborn Session?
The best time to book your newborn session is as early as possible. We pencil in your due date on the calendar and then adjust once baby arrives.
Because those first 14 days go by incredibly fast, especially when you’re recovering and adjusting having your session reserved ahead of time removes one more thing from your plate.

A Note for Connecticut & New York Moms
As a newborn photographer serving families throughout Fairfield County, Westchester County, and surrounding areas, I recommend reaching out early, especially if you’re due in busy seasons like spring and fall.
Our goal is to create a calm, fully guided experience for you, from wardrobe styling to heirloom album design, so you can simply show up and soak in these fleeting days.

The Truth About Timing
There is no “wrong” age for photos of your baby.
But if your heart is set on those sleepy, curled-up, dreamy newborn portraits, 5–14 days old is truly the magic window.
These first days pass in a blur. The tiny toes, flaky skin, little yawns, they change almost overnight.
Capturing them early preserves the very beginning of your story.

If you’re expecting and would like to reserve your newborn session, I’d love to connect and start planning something beautiful for your growing family.
